Almost every application essay comes with a length limit, and the limits are rarely stated the same way twice: '500 characters or fewer', '1,000 characters excluding spaces', 'under 2,000 bytes'. Korean job applications lean especially hard on byte limits, a convention that surprises most writers coming from English-language forms. The number your word processor shows and the number the application form counts often disagree, which is how people end up deleting whole sentences minutes before a deadline. Examples

Trimming a draft to a 500-character limit

Suppose a prompt allows 500 characters including spaces and your draft comes back at 618. You need to cut 118 characters. A typical Korean application sentence runs 40 to 60 characters, so that is roughly two or three sentences — enough information to decide whether to delete a whole point or shave about 15 characters from each of eight sentences. Filling 80 to 100 percent of the limit is the usual advice, so aim for the 400–500 band and re-paste after each round of edits to watch the number move.

Meeting a 2,000-byte limit

When a system limits by bytes, the character count alone will not tell you whether you pass. Take a 1,000-character draft made of 880 Korean characters, 92 spaces, and 28 Latin letters, digits, and punctuation marks: that is 880×2 + 120×1 = 1,880 bytes. You have 120 bytes left, which is 60 more Korean characters. A denser draft with fewer spaces would hit 2,000 bytes before reaching 1,000 characters. Reading the byte total next to the character total lets you convert the remaining headroom into actual words.

Hitting a minimum report length

For an assignment that requires at least 3,000 characters excluding spaces, a draft showing 3,420 with spaces and 2,910 without is still 90 characters short. Watching both numbers at once is what keeps you from mistaking one standard for the other the night before submission. Check too whether the cover page, table of contents, and bibliography count toward the total; if they do not, paste only the body text. The line and word counts displayed alongside are useful for spotting paragraphs that have grown out of proportion.

Checking length for SEO

Search engines truncate result descriptions by pixel width rather than character count, which works out to roughly 155–160 characters of English and only about 80 characters of Korean, since Korean glyphs are wider. The practical move is to front-load the key sentence within the first 70–80 characters and verify the length here. Body copy has no magic number, but a widely used editorial floor is around 1,500–2,000 characters for a post that intends to cover its topic. Pasting one section at a time also reveals whether a single heading has ballooned relative to the rest.

FAQ

Should I count with or without spaces?

It depends entirely on the organization, so read the posting and the input form first. When nothing is specified, most systems count what the input box counts, which includes spaces; others state 'excluding spaces' explicitly. The gap between the two is larger than people expect. Spaces make up roughly 12–18 percent of Korean prose and closer to 15–18 percent of English prose, so a 500-character text with spaces lands somewhere near 410–440 without them. If the instructions stay ambiguous, write to the stricter standard — spaces included — and always paste the final version into the real form to confirm against its own counter.

Why do bytes and characters give different numbers?

A character count is how many symbols you can see; a byte count is how much storage those symbols take. Because different characters take different amounts of storage, the two numbers are not supposed to match. Following the Korean recruiting convention, this tool counts anything in the ASCII range — letters, digits, spaces, common punctuation — as 1 byte, and full-width characters such as Korean, Chinese, and Japanese as 2 bytes. The more Korean text you have, the further the byte total pulls ahead. A 500-character passage that is 450 Korean characters comes to 450×2 + 50 = 950 bytes, while 500 characters of English is just 500 bytes. Byte limits are nearly impossible to estimate by feel, which is exactly why checking before submission matters.

Is a Korean character 2 bytes or 3 bytes?

Both answers are correct, for different encodings. In EUC-KR and its extension CP949, the encodings that dominated Korean computing for decades, one Korean syllable occupies 2 bytes. In UTF-8, the encoding the modern web runs on, the same syllable takes 3 bytes. So 'Korean is 2 bytes' is simply false in a UTF-8 context. The convention survives because Korean application systems kept the limits that were set in the EUC-KR era, which is why applicants learn to read '2,000 bytes' as roughly 1,000 Korean characters. This tool matches the convention applicants actually encounter and counts full-width characters as 2 bytes. If the system you are applying to measures real UTF-8 bytes, the same text will register about 1.5 times larger, so target around 60 percent of the stated limit and confirm in the live form.

Do line breaks and blank lines count?

This tool treats a line break as whitespace. It adds 1 to the 'with spaces' count, is excluded from the 'without spaces' count, and contributes 1 byte. The line count is the number of segments separated by line breaks, so a blank line between paragraphs registers as its own line. Other systems differ: some store a break as a carriage return plus a line feed and charge 2 bytes for it, and some strip breaks from the total altogether. The more paragraphs you use, the more this difference accumulates, so if you are sitting right on the limit, leave yourself 20–30 bytes of margin.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. Every figure — characters, bytes, words, lines — is computed in your own browser, and the text is neither transmitted nor stored anywhere. That matters for application essays in particular, which tend to carry company names, schools, project histories, and other details you would not want sitting on someone else's server. The flip side is that nothing persists: refreshing the page or closing the tab clears the box. Keep the working draft in a word processor or notes app and use this page to check finished text.

How do I cut length when I am over the limit?

Fix the phrasing before you delete any content. Turning hedged constructions into direct ones — 'I came to realize' into 'I realized', 'I believe that it is' into 'it is', 'conducted an analysis of' into 'analyzed' — typically saves 5–10 characters per sentence. Across ten sentences that is 50–100 characters, which is 10–20 percent of a 500-character limit. Then strip connectives and intensifiers, delete any opening sentence that merely restates the prompt, and merge two anecdotes that demonstrate the same competency into one. Most drafts fit after that. If yours still does not, compress background narration into figures: three sentences of setup often reduce to a phrase like 'cut processing time 12 percent over three months'. Why application essays have length limits

From the reviewer's side, a length limit is a way to control reading time. When a single opening draws thousands of applications, essays of wildly different lengths make the review schedule unpredictable and quietly reward whoever wrote the most. Giving every applicant the same box protects both the fairness of the comparison and the feasibility of the process.

The limit is also part of what is being assessed. Compressing an experience and its evidence into a fixed space is the same skill as writing a readable status report or a one-page proposal, which is work almost every role involves. If two people describe comparable experience in 500 characters and one version lands far more clearly, the difference reads as editing skill rather than as a bigger accomplishment. Text that was hacked down at the last second to squeeze under the cap tends to show it, with broken transitions and half-finished points.

In practice, filling 80 to 100 percent of the allowance is the safe range. An answer at half length reads as unprepared or uninterested, while going over creates a mechanical problem: many application systems silently truncate the overflow when saving, and some refuse to save at all. Discovering either one minutes before the deadline leaves no room to recover, so finish the length check a day early.

Why systems disagree about character counts

The root cause is character encoding — the several different schemes for turning text into stored numbers. Early ASCII, which only ever needed English letters, digits, and punctuation, used 1 byte per character. To fit Korean, EUC-KR and its extension CP949 represented each Korean syllable in 2 bytes. UTF-8, today's web standard, is variable length: ASCII characters take 1 byte, Latin-extended, Greek, and Cyrillic take 2, Korean and Chinese characters take 3, and emoji take 4.

So the question 'how many bytes is one Korean character' has no answer until you name an encoding. It is 2 in EUC-KR, 3 in UTF-8, and in UTF-16 — the internal representation used by Java and JavaScript — Korean and Latin characters alike take 2. Korean recruiting systems settled on the 2-byte figure because their limits were written when the underlying databases ran on EUC-KR. Many of those systems later migrated to UTF-8 but kept the old counting rule, both because '2,000 bytes' had become a number applicants understood and because changing it would have quietly changed how much text people could submit.

This tool follows the same convention. Any character whose code point is U+007F or below counts as 1 byte, and anything above it counts as 2 — which covers Korean, Chinese, and Japanese, but also enclosed characters, typographic symbols, and accented Latin letters. One consequence worth knowing: emoji occupy 4 bytes in real UTF-8 but are counted as 2 here, so a text heavy with emoji can diverge from what the destination system reports.

Character counts themselves also depend on the unit. This tool counts code points, so a single emoji registers as 1 character, whereas software that measures string length in UTF-16 code units reports the same emoji as 2. In the other direction, flag and family emoji are built from several joined code points and register as 2 or more characters here. For ordinary Korean or English prose the two methods agree exactly, so this rarely matters — but when a draft contains unusual symbols, treat the counter in the actual submission form as the final authority.

Editing techniques that cut length without cutting substance

First, compress the verbs. 'I came to understand' becomes 'I understood', 'I was able to reduce' becomes 'I reduced', 'it can be said that' disappears entirely. In Korean the equivalent moves are turning '~하게 되었습니다' into '~했습니다' and '~라고 생각합니다' into a plain assertion. Each substitution saves 5–10 characters and, more usefully, makes the sentence sound more certain. Double passives such as 'was made to be improved' collapse into active verbs the same way.

Second, unpack nominalizations. 'Performed a verification of data integrity' is 'verified data integrity'. Phrases that exist only to link nouns — 'with respect to', 'in the context of', 'by means of', and the Korean '~에 대한', '~에 있어서', '~을 통하여' — can almost always be deleted or replaced by a single particle or preposition.

Third, remove connectives and intensifiers. 'And so', 'moreover', 'however', 'very', 'really', 'extremely' can usually go without any loss of meaning. Cleaning up just these words typically removes 3–5 percent of an essay.

Fourth, delete any opening that restates the prompt. A sentence like 'The reason I applied to your company is as follows' spends twenty-odd characters conveying nothing. Lead with the conclusion and supply the evidence after it; the essay gets shorter and the first impression gets stronger.

Fifth, replace background narration with figures. Instead of three sentences describing a situation, write 'cut processing time 12 percent over three months' or 'reduced a five-meetings-per-week cadence to two'. You save close to a hundred characters and the writing becomes more concrete, not less. Numbers read as verifiable evidence, so they are the last thing that should be cut.

Sixth, merge anecdotes that prove the same point. If two team projects were both included to demonstrate collaboration, keeping only the stronger one and developing it properly wins on both length and persuasiveness. Seventh, hold each sentence to a single idea and split or truncate anything running past two lines. Eighth, treat the closing pledge as a deletion candidate: lines in the vein of 'I will do my best if hired' carry no information and should go first.

Working through these in order usually removes 15–25 percent of a draft, which is often enough to clear the limit without deleting a single substantive point. Re-paste after each pass to see how far the number dropped; a few rounds of that will show you which of these habits costs you the most space in your own writing.
