Do character limits include or exclude spaces?

It depends on the organization. When nothing is specified, limits usually include spaces, but some explicitly say 'excluding spaces'. Always check the instructions on the posting or the input form, and when in doubt, aim for the stricter standard — counting spaces in.

What is the difference between bytes and character count?

Character count is the number of visible characters, while bytes measure the storage size of the text. Following the convention of Korean application systems, letters, digits, and spaces count as 1 byte, while full-width characters such as Korean, Chinese, and Japanese count as 2 bytes. The same character count can therefore produce very different byte totals.

How many bytes is one Korean character?

Korean application and recruiting systems conventionally count one Korean character as 2 bytes (based on EUC-KR encoding). In UTF-8, however, one Korean character takes 3 bytes, so results may differ between systems. This tool uses the 2-byte convention that is standard in Korean recruiting systems.

Do line breaks count as characters?

In this tool, line break characters are treated as whitespace: they are included in the 'with spaces' count and excluded from the 'without spaces' count. Some systems count a line break as 1 character or 2 bytes, so if you are right at the limit, leave yourself some margin.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. All counting runs entirely in your browser; the text you enter is never transmitted or stored. Since the content disappears when you leave the page, save your draft elsewhere.

Understanding character limits on applications

Organizations limit length to test how well applicants can summarize and to standardize evaluation time. Filling 80–100% of the limit is generally recommended — too short can look careless, and exceeding the limit often gets your input truncated by the system.

Keeping one message per sentence also helps. If a sentence runs past two lines, split it or keep only the core point. After trimming, run the text through this counter again to confirm it passes the limit.
